In case you missed our live video chat — Terry O’Reilly’s Age of Persuasion — here’s the archived video you can watch at your leisure.

I had a great time meeting Terry, interviewing him and learning more about his history in and perspective on the advertising creative business.

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the contributions, creativity and hard work of Terry’s partner in The Age of Persuasion, Mike Tennant. Though The Age of Persuasion bears the name of Terry is a collaboration between Terry and Mike that speaks with one voice.

We’re putting the final touches on AdHack Live Episode #4: Terry O’Reilly’s Age of Persuasion.

We go live tomorrow, Wednesday, December at 5 pm EST / 2 pm PST and we’re in the final steps — collecting our questions, setting up the shoot, filling the flask.

And we wanted to put out a call for questions. Do you (yes, you!) have a question for Terry O’Reilly?

The Age of Persuasion radio show has been a huge hit in its 3 seasons on the air.

Now the Age of Persuasion book is in bookstores, collecting the finest anecdotes, advertising history, strategy and tactics from our very own times — what Terry convincingly calls “The Age of Persuasion.”

Surely you’ve got something caught in your craw about the world of advertising.

Tell us. We’ll put the question to Terry and you’ll get your answer.

Some Questions We’ve Received

Wondering what people are wondering?

Craig Riggs asks:

You talk a lot about getting good creative work approved and into market. Can you elaborate on your experience in how to get great creative work into market? Does a platform like AdHack provide a way to get more work into market or for advertisers to take more, smaller risks?

Craig Dunn wonders:

With advertising ‘embedded’ into everything.. cell phones, TV, internet, highways, movies… do you feel that advertisers/marketers have a responsibility to offer some level of entertainment to the audience within the advertising. (Referencing Age of Persuasion episode about Highway signs that didn’t “keep the promise” of offering quality entertainment in exchange for exposure to ads.)

Surely you’ve got questions too — even if you’re not an AdHack member or your first name isn’t Craig.

Post them here as a comment. Email it to us. Send us an @AdHack reply on Twitter.

Pick your means and we’ll apply the method.

And be sure to tune in live to AdHack Live.

Like our very own AdHack Live, the folks at Crispin Porter + Bogusky have launched a pretty cool new live web video show called Fearless Q & A.

Here’s the latest episode Tifko:

Watch live video from FearLess Q+A on Justin.tv

Get Hired at an Ad Creative Agency

That’s the real topic of the show on ‘portfolios and books and getting hired — how juniors can into agencies.’

Wherein Alex Bogusky and Tiffany Kosel discuss:

What’s the campaign for me?

What does it take to get your book noticed?

How do you create the right campaign for you to find the right agency fit?

Throughout, viewers can ask questions by posting to @fearlessqa on Twitter.

One warning for those watching — the video is 58:42 long and I can’t for the life of me find a timeline. So there’s no fast forward or rewind. Once you start, you’re going. Back takes you back to the start.

Nuts! Since we recorded and broadcast the third episode of AdHack Live I’ve been trying to get the full video file back. But no luck.

Somehow we started broadcasting at 9 am and got broadcasting. At the same time we pushed record and didn’t get recording. Then, starting about 15 minutes into the talk, we get recording.

Why? No clue.

So we experience the double-edged sword of free tools: wonderfully accessible and easy to start, terribly unreliable with no service to be found.

Sorry to anyone waiting to see the archive of the chat. The first half was excellent and so was this second half.

In less than 12 hours you get to join us on AdHack Live for a video chat discussing the new book from Crispin Porter + Bogusky‘s John Winsor and Alex Bogusky called Baked In.

To kick off the conversation, a few more details on the book itself and how it extends beyond its covers.

The book is divided into 3 parts:

Part One: Preheat Your Mind

Part Two: 28 Rules to Help You Bake

Part Three: The Way Forward

The majority of the book comprises the 28 rules or ‘recipes.’ Each recipe is 2 parts: a topic for discussion and a plan to put the topic into action.

The topic generally consists of stories drawn from the day-to-day experiences of Winsor and Bogusky. They’re great and tangible. The plan takes the recipe and provides some easy tactics to put it into practice where you work.

For example: Culture Trumps Influencers.

Make a list of the cultural trends that influence your consumers’ behavior. Take your time; all of the items on this list will not be immediately apparent. Stay with it, and you will gradually observe more and more. Be a good observer. Remove yourself from your own cultural perspective. Look for the absurdities, the incongruities, the things that don’t necessarily make sense. You will begin to laugh as you start to see the culture from the outside. (Laughing is a good sign.)

Find out what’s really beneath the existing trend. Is the truth under the truth? Use the And1 example: Was it that NBA stars sold sneakers because they were in the NBA, or because they were famous ball players? If it is the latter, then any famous basketball player can sell shoes. So let’s make somebody new famous. Let’s create the fame to create the sales.

In your business, what is the accepted cultural convention? If you get the right fix on this, you can flip it on its head and make it your own.

Pretty interesting and useful, right?

Then each recipe has a unique hashtag. The one for Culture Trumps Influences is #convention.

Add that hash tag to a Twitter post and your contribution gets rolled up with other participants’ contributions to form an ongoing discussion of the specific recipe.

The home site for Baked In is called a wiki/blog. Wiki because it’s editable by anyone who wants to create an account on the site. Blog because it’s built on WordPress and rolls by blog-style.

So each recipe is editable and accompanied by the specific Twitter posts that reference it. Nice.

And did I mention that all 28 recipes are on the wiki/blog? Yup. Go check them out.

Then come back tomorrow morning, Thursday, Oct. 1, at 9 am PST / 12 noon EST, and join us on AdHack Live to join the conversation.

Ask a question and you may well win yourself a copy of Baked In.

(And if you miss it we’ll archive it for replay, though the freebies will be gone.)

Baked In: Creating Products and Businesses That Market Themselves is the new book from Crispin, Porter + Bogusky‘s Alex Bogusky and John Winsor.

The book is meant to launch on Thursday, October 1 and we’ll have unexclusive coverage.

Brett MacFarlane and James Sherrett are back with a special edition of AdHack Live focused on the ideas of Baked In.

What ideas?

For starters, here’s the Baked In book description from the publisher:

The old way of selling was to create safe, ordinary products and combine them with mass marketing. The new way is to create truly innovative products and build the marketing right in. But how does a brand make the transition from old to new? According to advertising gurus Alex Bogusky and John Winsor, it starts with the realization that the message is not the product, the product is the message. In Baked-In, they offer a step-by-step guide on how brands can adapt and thrive in this brave new world. Using these tools, Bogusky and Winsor have successfully marketed some of today’s most important brands, including Google, Nike, Microsoft, Patagonia, Toyota, and Burger King. They reveal how, through tools at hand — product design, brand history, internal collaboration — and the new tools of digital technology — YouTube and the web in general — companies can succeed in the 21st-century marketplace.

Win a Copy of Baked In

We’re going to giving away 2 copies of Baked In — one for the best question prior to the AdHack Live episode on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 9 am (PST), the second for the best question during the AdHack Live episode.

How do you get yourself one of them free copies?

Prior to Thursday, Oct. 1 at 9 am (PST): ask a question here in the comments or by emailing live@adhack.com

From 9 to 9:30 on Thursday, Oct. 1, tune in to AdHack Live and ask live in the chat window beside the video player.

Need more ideas?

Okay, here’s a slideshow presentation from Joakim Vars Nilsen called Walk The Talk – How to market for a sustainable business model..

Walk The Talk

It’s not the same as Baked In but it overlaps in some important ways and Baked In is embargoed until its launch.

Ready now? Okay go.

Today we set out to find the answer to this question on AdHack Live: Episode 2! James Sherrett welcomed back Brett MacFarlane to discuss the advertising awards industry. From big awards to small awards, we wanted to know if ad awards create better work or just better ways for ad agencies to sell their services?

We choose a topic for the show.

We take questions on the chosen topic, before the show.

At a set airtime, we go live with the show.

We keep taking questions during the show.

We give away prizes to folks whose questions we used.

Episode 2 airs live on Thursday, August 6 at 9 am PST (12 noon EST).

Advertising Awards: What Have You Done For Me Lately?

Seemed topical to us. We are just at the transition of the ad awards season.

The big noise of the Cannes Lions has subsided and the local noise of thousands of smaller awards shows is just starting to honk.

So what have ad awards shows done for you lately?

Have they resulted in better ads?

Have they recognized worthy creative efforts?

Have they increased your dim view of competitive efforts?

Have they uncovered obscure gems?

Have they rightly celebrated noteworthy, groundbreaking achievements?

Those questions and more are set to be answered on AdHack Live Edisode 2.

And We Want Your Questions

Have an opinion? A question? A comment on the state of advertising creative?
Send them by email to live@adhack.com or leave a comment below.
