Product Displacement: Fictional Brands for Fictional Worlds

Last Christmas at a party I met a designer who created fictional brands for use on movie sets. He explained the job to me — how he researched the product category, came up with a reasonable name and designed the packaging along with the set director.

I was darned intrigued. Heck, how much fun could it be to create fictional brands? That conversation stuck with me.

So when I discovered Product Displacement, I was hooked.

Product Displacement is a blog that collects the fictional brands used in fiction, mostly TV shows. It’s a running archive.

And because we’re surrounded by brands we need brands in our realist fiction. Fictional brands provide a great entry for creative folks to exercise themselves and a great way to have fun with our consumer culture.
